Fallas. A festival like no other!
This post takes a look into this unique celebration, and this time I have written in both English and Spanish. Fallas. ¡Una fiesta única!
Este post trata de esta extraordinaria celebración, y esta vez he escrito en inglés y en español. Fallas: A Fiery Fusion of Tradition and Art
Every March, Valencia ignites with the vibrant festival of Fallas, a spectacular blend of artistic expression, creative satire, and of course, a mind-blowing amount of pyrotechnics. The history of Fallas dates way back, to a time when carpenters burned wooden scraps and off-cuts —known as 'parots'—to celebrate the arrival of spring and honor Saint Joseph, their patron saint. This tradition has transformed through the ages, ´parots´are now known as ´ninots´ and the streets of Valencia are taken over by ninots and huge, elaborate structures known as fallas. The ninots & fallas often depict local, national and global current affairs and figures, while showcasing impressive creative talent.
La Nostra Falla: Bringing Valencian Flames to Ibiza
The island of Ibiza has embraced this fiery tradition through "La Nostra Falla," a passionate group based in Sant Antoni de Portmany. Since 1999, they've been crafting and burning their own fallas, infusing the local culture with a Valencian touch. Their dedication shines through their motto: "Treballem il·lusionats per a la falla que cada any tornarem a plantar" (We work excitedly for the falla that we will plant again each year).
Fallas 2025 in Ibiza: A Celebration to Remember
In 2025, La Nostra Falla continued this tradition with great enthusiasm and the weather was really on their side! A weekend of gorgeous sun to allow the celebrations to flourish. Carola Vélez Sendra as the Fallera Mayor, accompanied by Lucía Castillo Fallos as Fallera Mayor Infantil, joined local residents and visitors alike in a vibrant display of community spirit and cultural pride. This past weekend I felt like I had been transported to Valencia - a soundtrack of a marching band, constant petardos (firecrackers) and two mascletás (fireworks but in the day - the focus is the sound & vibrations).
This year´s falla spoke of the consumerist world we find ourselves in. (pictured below) Watching the falla burn, it got me thinking, who actually benefits from websites like Temu and Aliexpress? I invite you, to pause and really reflect on this too.

Cada marzo, Valencia se enciende con la vibrante fiesta de las Fallas, una espectacular mezcla de expresión artística, sátira creativa y, por supuesto, una alucinante cantidad de pirotecnia. La historia de las Fallas se remonta a una época en la que los carpinteros quemaban restos de madera, conocidos como parots, para celebrar la llegada de la primavera y honrar a San José, su patrón. Esta tradición se ha transformado con el paso del tiempo, los parots se conocen ahora como ninots y las calles de Valencia se llenan de ninots y enormes y elaboradas estructuras conocidas como fallas. Los ninots y las fallas suelen representar temas y personajes de la actualidad local, nacional y mundial, al tiempo que muestran un impresionante talento creativo.

La isla de Ibiza ha acogido esta tradición ardiente a través de La Nostra Falla, un grupo apasionado con sede en Sant Antoni de Portmany. Desde 1999, elaboran y queman sus propias fallas, fusionando la cultura local con un toque valenciano. Su dedicación brilla a través de su lema: «Treballem il-lusionats per a la falla que cada any tornarem a plantar» (Trabajamos ilusionados por la falla que cada año volveremos a plantar).

En 2025, La Nostra Falla continuó esta tradición con gran entusiasmo y con un tiempo realmente favorable. Un fin de semana de sol espléndido que permitió que las celebraciones florecieran. Carola Vélez Sendra como Fallera Mayor, acompañada por Lucía Castillo Fallos como Fallera Mayor Infantil, se unieron a los residentes locales y visitantes en una vibrante muestra de espíritu comunitario y orgullo cultural. Este fin de semana pasado me sentí como si me hubieran transportado a Valencia: una banda de música, petardos constantes y dos mascletás.
La falla de este año hablaba del mundo consumista en el que nos encontramos. Viendo arder la falla, me quedé pensando, ¿quién se beneficia realmente de sitios como Temu y Aliexpress? Te invito a que tú también te pares a reflexionar.

Tanto si es ciudadano como si es viajero, no puede perderse las Fallas. Desde la fascinante plantà (el montaje de las fallas) hasta la culminante cremà (la quema de las esculturas), la fiesta ofrece una inmersión inolvidable en la cultura española.
